COLOR WORKSHOP

Instructor: Sandy Meyer

Saturday, June 14 9:00 am -4:00 pm
Members: $75 Nonmembers: $95
Fee includes all materials and box lunch

This is a workshop for all artists and would be artists, working in all mediums, who want to create more exciting art through a new awareness of color. We will make color an object of special consideration, and learn to use it in more creative ways. For many artists, their handling of color is a hit and miss affair. By becoming more aware of the properties of color we can become more proficient in the use of color and desired results become attainable. This workshop is an intense study of the effect that one color placed next to another can have. Colors are rarely seen in isolation. Putting the right colors together to create a pleasing rightness is what people have the most difficulty with. Colors juxtaposed play tricks with the eye; as soon as they are put together they change. These are some of the items that will be explored:
Brief history of color
Psychological effects of color
Simultaneous contrast
Qualitative Contrast
Figure-ground relationships
Forbidden colors
Color illusions

Sandy's work has been featured in American Artists Magazine, The Artist's Magazine, and Watercolor Magic. Her works are included in museums and many other prominent collections. She holds signature status with Watercolor USA Honor Society and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. Sandy recently had a Thirty year Retrospective of her works at the Quincy Art Museum, Quincy Illinois, where PBS did a program of the works.

Watercolorist Mark Mehaffey to conduct local seminar

Published Wed, Aug 1, 2007 Grand Haven Tribune

Lakeland Artists are bringing nationally recognized watercolorist Mark E. Mehaffey to town for a three-day water media workshop.

The Oct. 1-3 workshop titled "Composition, Color and Experiments in Watercolor" is designed to jumpstart the work of experienced artists and provide a solid foundation on which advanced beginning painters can build stronger visual statements.

"Mehaffey is much in demand as in instructor and we are fortunate to have him come to our area," said Helen Lystra, a Lakeland Artists member and one of the workshop organizers. "I've taken his workshop and found him to be an excellent instructor — friendly, knowledgeable and very giving of his expertise. He knows how to teach."

On the first day of the workshop, Mehaffey will help artists explore ways to create stronger paintings using design and compositional tools.

Color is the topic of the second session. The artist will discuss and demonstrate how neutrals and neutralized color can be used to create mood, and how to effectively use complements, saturated color and analogous color schemes.

Day three is devoted to intuitive exploration of textures, mono printing and painting on slippery surfaces.

A resident of Williamston, Mehaffey is a former public school art instructor. His paintings are included in private, corporate and permanent public collections across the country, including the Muskegon Museum of Art.

A signature member of the National Watercolor Society, the American Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America-master status, among others, Mehaffey has won major awards in juried exhibitions across the country.

The cost of the three-day workshop is $150 for members of Lakeland Artists, and $175 for nonmembers. A deposit of $25 is required to reserve a space, with payment in full due by Sept. 1. The 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. sessions will be held at the Grand Haven Area Arts Council, 1045 Columbus.

For more information on the workshop, call Lystra at 846-5429, or e-mail lakelandartists@hotmail.com.

"Log Cabin" The Winterfest 2007 Exhibit Winner

Winterfest 2007 winner Log Cabin by Sandy Meyer

Inspiration

The quilt pattern is called Log Cabin. It was the first quilt that I ever made. At the time, we were living in a log cabin, which was built in 1836, so it seemed appropriate. In the log cabin pattern the center block is always red, representing the fireplace, and the heart of the home. The repetition of shapes and colors is what makes quilts so enjoyable to look at, the same elements that give us pleasure in art. I carefully arranged the quilt so that the layers were visible. The backing is as important as the top. The white areas of the painted quilt were the most challenging part to paint. Earlier paintings of this series are not as three dimensional as this one. To keep the ripples held high during the week of painting, I stuffed rolled up towels between the layers. When Log Cabin #5 was in an art fair exhibit, I heard one gentleman say, "The real artist is the lady who made the quilt." I politely told him, "Thank you". He walked away without another word.

Steve Tagg

About this Artist:
Steve’s interest in glass began in 1982. For 17 years, he made stained glass his hobby. After entering and winning regional stained glass competitons, his reputation as a stained glass artist grew. In 1999, he pursued his passion for glass full time. His hobby then became the study of fine art. This led him to discover techniques where he has combined fine art with glass.

He calls this new form of art a GlasScape TM. A GlasScape uses glass and the concepts of two-dimensional landscape art. Steve works out the ideas of his image for his landscapes...
