Six "August" Expressions
Don't miss this eclectic and very interesting show featuring the artwork of Lee Brown (wood sculpture), Marlan Cotner (oils), Linda Foley (watercolors), Kevin and Dorota Rubley (cement sculpture), and Susie Brooks Wallace (watercolors).
The show runs through August 31st .
Don't miss the "Third Thursday Talk", August 19 at 7:00 pm.
Lee Brown will discuss his creative process from ideation and sketches to the materials and methods of making his art. Lee has worked in West Michigan in illustration, graphic design, and product design. His fine art has been exhibited in the MMA regional show and the DeVos Place during the Art Prize competition.
Linda Foley will be discussing her watercolor work, methods, inspiration, and paintings in the August show. Linda brings many talents to bear in each of her art works. She is an accomplished instrument maker and player of hammered dulcimers, quilter, wood carver and painter. Linda has been busy this year with a one woman show at the Art’s Place, Newago Arts Council in February and a show in Muskegon at the Bettye Clark Cannon Gallery in April. Linda’s most recent paintings convey the energy and movement of water reflections, cloud formations and shifting dunes within the landscape.

The natural pigments in soft pastels and oil pastels will light up the exhibit space during the Nuveen Community Center for the Arts August exhibit “Pure Color – A Pastel Exhibit.” Four artists – Carol Cousineau of Spring Lake, Vianna Szabo of Romeo, MI, Howard Garet of Grand Haven, and Carol Brauer-Schmidt of Grand Haven, will display their pastel works at the center August 6-26. Howard and other artists are be offering pastel workshops to complement the exhibit. See below for the workshop information.

CONTINUUM: ADVANCING FORM OVER TIME
"Large Henge Fragment with Portal"  by Lee S. Brown

Muskegon artist, Lee Brown, exhibits freestanding and wall sculpture created from wood, metal, stone, glass, paint, and found objects. Pieces are inspired by the purely shaped masks, geometric patterns and totemic objects of African art as well as earth forms and sacred relic containers. This exhibit is FREE and open to the public. Hours: 10 am-8 pm Mon, Thu, Fri; 10 am-6 pm Tue, Wed, Sat; 1-5 pm Sun.

Gallery Uptown Artists' Creations at the Spring Lake Library
123 E. Exchange Street, Spring Lake
Suzanne Moynihan's jewelry and sculpture, John Riepma's glass vases and sculptures and G.G. Haven's glass and mixed media sculptures will be on display and for sale at the Warner Baird Library (Spring Lake Library) during the months of July and August.  Library hours are:  Monday - Thursday 9:30am-8:30pm, Friday and Saturday - 9:30am-5:00pm, closed on Sunday.

Community Art News and Information

Pastel Workshops
Nuveen is offering three pastel classes to complement the exhibit. Sharon Smithem
will be teaching a youth (ages 7+) chalk pastel workshop August 9-12 form 10-11:30 a.
m. The cost is $10. Adults are welcome to join the Pure Color workshop with Vianna
Szabo on Saturday, August 7 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Szabo will cover identifying,
mixing, and controlling color to create art filled with light and harmony. The
workshop applies to all mediums, and is $95. Finally, Howard Garet will teach a
workshop titled “Painting Landscapes in Pastel” on Tuesdays, August 17-31 from 6-9
p.m. The workshop is open to artists of all levels, and will focus on how to start your
artwork, capture light, and convey the natural colors found in landscapes. Howard’s
workshop is $70.

The Nuveen Community Center for the Arts is looking for artists to participate in two upcoming exhibitions – September’s Crossing Threads – A Weaving Show, and October’s Nature through Artist’s Eyes.
Crossing Threads
is open to weavers producing original woven art in any medium. Weavings using traditional patterns and techniques are welcome as long as the artist incorporates to their design. The exhibit is open to any media, from traditional to alternative including but not limited to cotton, wool plastic, metal, paper, etc. Any submissions deemed inappropriate or created from “kits” will not be displayed. Artwork is due by August 26, and the exhibit runs September 9-30.
Nature through Artist’s Eyes
will highlight artists who find inspiration in nature, and translate that inspiration in any medium. The exhibit is open to any artist whose work conveys or interprets any aspect of the natural world, be it flora, fauna, or any other aspect of the great outdoors. Artwork is due by September 30, and the show will be on display October 7-28.
