This Grand Haven artist, is recognized for excellence in landscape and still lifes.
Working mainly in pastels and watercolors, his work has received honors in regional,
statewide and national exhibitions.
Artist statement:
In an unsettling time, when change is rampant, and our values and beliefs are
constantly being challenged, I would like to leave viewers of my paintings with the comforting
feeling of the beauty that still surrounds us.
Travels abroad have inspired many of Howard's paintings, yet he chooses West Michigan as his
favorite spot to paint because of the beauty he finds here. "I like to start each painting with
a plein-air study," he says.
Howard recently was named Artist of the Year 2007 by the Grand Haven Area Arts Council.
The judges commented on his ability to add mood and intimacy to his landscapes His skill with color, texture
and his handling of the medium "turns an ordinary scene into a work of fine art," they commented.
Awards and Honors:
He has received numerous other National, State and Regional awards in his 11-year career as an
exhibiting artist, including being named one of the Top 100 Pastel Artists by Pastel Journal magazine,
and among its top 25 Still Life Artists.
