“I paint for the thrill of watching the watercolors and the
white paper interact. Each time I paint I hope to record the
movement of water. I pour paint and tip the paper to
increase the tempo of the flow and encourage the colors to
mingle. I paint with watercolors because the interaction
between this complex medium and the artist allows a sense of
intimacy and playfulness.
Lake Michigan is my muse and my inspiration. Each new
painting is a love affair with the spontaneity of liquid
motion observed on its shore. My subjects are landscapes –
dunes, shore lines, wetlands, and woodland interiors –
touched with light and splashed with color. I paint with a
strong sense of place.
Although I can not remember a time that I did not draw, I
came to painting late in life. My first career was as a
builder of musical instruments specifically, the hammer
dulcimer. You will find paintings of musicians in my
repertoire. I started with one player and instrument and now
am painting duets and groups. I enjoy painting the human
form and try to make visual the connections between people
by using white shapes that thread through the group, darks
that link and interlock binding all.
